Textile Tragedy
The cost of consumption
by Lianne Regtuit
Four-part wall artwork
“Textile Tragedy” is a artistic commentary on the environmental impact of the textile industry, depicted through a combination of mixed media on four canvases. Positioned in a dynamic arrangement of two canvases side by side and two below, this artwork invites viewers to witness the devastating consequences of textile production on our natural world.
Clay-made textile fabric emerges from the edges, symbolizing the insatiable consumption of nature by the textile industry. As it advances towards the center of the artwork, it engulfs and devours all in its path.
Contrasting with the synthetic clay fabric, nature is represented through living Sphagnum moss and self-grown plant cuttings, offering a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our ecosystems. Yet, even these resilient elements are no match for the relentless advance of industrialization.
“Textile Tragedy” challenges viewers to confront the grim reality of textile pollution and its far-reaching consequences. It serves as a call to action, urging us to reconsider our relationship with consumption and industry, and to strive for a more sustainable and harmonious coexistence with the natural world.
Dimensions: Set of four artworks, each measuring 25 x 25 cm.
Materials: Cotton canvas, air-dry clay, and a selection of plant species including Sphagnum platyphyllum, Chlorophytum comosum, Peperomia scandens variegata, Kalanchoe daigremontiana, Begonia corallina de Lucerna, Pilea peperomioides, and Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii.
